The wind is howling outside, the fire is burning brightly in the woodstove, I have a lovely cup of hot chocolate by my side, and it’s very, very quiet. Yup, it’s that time of year again. It’s the week between Christmas and New Year’s as I write this (it will be after New Year’s by the time you get this) and it’s time once again to reflect on New Year’s resolutions.

Throughout my life I’ve had a love-hate relationship with these resolutions. On the one hand I used to be in love with the bright, shiny hope they offer of a better, more comfortable, more enjoyable life. On the other hand, I used to hate the fact that I couldn’t remember them for more than 3 months into the New Year. Maybe you know what I’m talking about.

This year, instead of writing New Year’s resolutions I’m going to have a New Year Revolution. I’ve been pondering what makes New Year’s resolutions less than successful and realized that, for the most part, they’re too mundane – too boring even. Oh sure, at the beginning of the year losing 20 pounds, saving for a long-deserved vacation, or trying not to gossip about other people sounds exciting enough … but 6 months into the year can you even remember these aims?

So I’m challenging myself – and you – to create a really magical New Year’s Revolution for 2006. I’m laying out some magical thoughts and questions for us to consider this year. If these principles resonate with you, how will they change the way you handle the coming year? And, instead of writing resolutions for ’06 (they sound so ominous sometimes), how about conducting a one year experiment instead? Hmmmm…

Here they are:

Possibility #1: Instead of “a day in the life” what about “a life in the day”? What if every day was a microcosm of your life? What if getting up was being born and going to bed was dying? How would that change the way you spend each day? What if you viewed an entire year the same way? How would that change the way you live in 2006?

Possibility #2: The law of “as above, so below” tells us that everything physical has a corresponding energetic vibration. Even when the physical “thing” no longer exists on the planet, the vibration still exists in the Universe. A person who dies leaves a complete vibration behind. So you might not be able to access the compassion of Gandhi, the musical genius of John Lennon, or the brilliance of Einstein by talking to these people, but what if you could achieve the same thing by accessing their vibration? If they have left a complete blueprint of their life, memories, emotions, and experience behind, what would happen to your life if you could access those? You can (more to come on this). How does that change 2006 for you?

Possibility #3: What if you’re not here to learn a bunch of lessons, get everything done on your checklist, fix a broken world, or … ? What if you’ve agreed to spend a certain amount of time on this planet and you can choose to spend it any way you want? What if this lifetime were free of obligation and responsibility? And what if how you choose to see the world is exactly as it is for you? Who says we’re all living in the same world? Maybe we’re not! Someone who disagrees with your world view may be living in a parallel world that just touches yours from time to time.

Possibility #4: And here’s the most important one: What if you don’t need to know how you’re going to achieve anything before you decide to choose it? The choosing comes first and the figuring it out comes later. If you had to figure everything out before you did it, you’d be dead before you got anything done! So choose your New Year’s Revolution with abandon and glee – the rest will come to you as it’s needed (that’s magic, after all!).
